What are the different types of dental braces for teeth?
Braces come in many different varieties, and the type of braces used to straighten teeth will depend on the patient’s individual needs. At Global Smiles Orthodontics, Dr. Edgar Mendieta and his team may recommend one of the three main types of methods: metal braces, ceramic, or invisible aligners.
- Metal braces. Metal braces are the most common type of orthodontic treatment for patients with misaligned teeth or an improper bite. These consist of brackets that are bonded to the front surfaces of each tooth, connected by a thin archwire that pulls the teeth gradually into their proper positions over time. Newer versions of metal braces use smaller wires and brackets than traditional metal braces to reduce discomfort during treatment.
- Ceramic braces. Ceramic braces offer a less-visible alternative to metal braces, as they are made of clear or tooth-colored material. They work just like regular braces, but the brackets blend in with your teeth and make them less noticeable.
- Invisible aligners. Invisible aligners are an excellent choice for adults who want an aesthetic option for straightening their teeth without the need for traditional braces. These aligners are custom-made to fit each patient’s mouth and work by gradually shifting the teeth into place over time. Unlike metal braces, these can be removed when eating or cleaning your teeth, making them much more comfortable and convenient than traditional braces.
